Plaiting designer

This tool no longer works in newer browsers due to changes in Java's security model. We have left it here for now, as people with older browsers might still be able to use this. I may convert this to javascript at some point if I think there is sufficient interest, but other projects need sorting first!

Design plait-style braids for threads, ribbons or hair with the plait designer

Send us a photo of your finished braid, and we can put it in our gallery.

If you enable Javascript, we can give you a link to your pattern - you can send this to your friends, use it in a blog etc to let other people see what you have done.

You should be seeing the design applet just here. You either need to install a newer version of Java, or make sure it is properly enabled. Get the latest version at the Java websiteor find useful information at Java Tester.

Once you have got Java working, design your patterns and choose your threads for your plait.

Instructions

Design regular plait patterns, where alternating rows repeat the same weave crossover patterns. As the threads zig-zag across the plait, they form repeating patterns of colour.

Add or remove threads to get the number of strands you want to use in your braid. You can have any number from 3 to 16.

Set the weave pattern to change how the threads interleave.

Click the colour you want, then click on the pattern to place it. If you want to change several threads at once, change the first thread then hold the mouse button as you move across the rest.

Select wide or narrow threads to see how the plait will look, or examine how the threads weave together.

When you want to make your plait, arrange your threads as shown at the top of the diagram, then cross the threads over as shown in the weave pattern. Use the row 1 pattern for the first row, the row 2 pattern for the second row, then repeat the row 1 and row 2 patterns. Watch out for ends of rows where you might not use a thread at the edge.

If the applet isn't working, take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions page and see if you can find the reason there. If not, please Contact Us with more information so we can try and solve the problem.
